Hobe' was the epitome of "costume jewelry" and designed pieces for Ziegfield Broadway productions. It was Ziegfield who may have coined the phrase costume jewelry. Hobe' jewelery was worn by starlets like Ava Gardner & Marilyn Monroe, and is highly collectible. Hobé designed some remarkably intricate and finely crafted jewelry during the 1920's-1940's. They were made using unfoiled stones to simulate colored gemstones or brightly colored finely faceted glass and set in sterling silver that was complexly twisted, braided, and coiled to create detailed floral designs. The Hobe jewelry house operated for several generations, but the 1930's - 1940's are considered the most collectible.
