Vintage 1955 oil painting, "Little Patriots" by Wisconsin artist Lester Schwartz. Signed by the artist in upper right corner.
Lester Schwartz (1912–2006) was a painter, sculptor and printmaker born in Manitowoc, Wi. He studied under Boris Anisfelt at the Art Institute of Chicago and traveled the world on fellowship, including time in Paris where he met Picasso. Influenced heavily by Gauguin, he painted in Bali, worked for the WPA, served in the U.S. Army creating chapel art, and became Artist-in-Residence at Ripon College in 1944. The school allowed him to renovate a fraternity house; this gave him the opportunity to paint without any restrictions except teaching, for four hours a day. His works can be found in museums and galleries including The Art Institute of Chicago, Gallery of Wisconsin Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Measures approximately 6" x 9", framed to 15" x 18", in burlap/wood. Northeast Wisconsin Art Exhibit paperwork on back.
