Rockwell Kent (June 21, 1882 – March 13, 1971) was an American painter, printmaker, illustrator, writer, sailor, adventurer and voyager. He was best known for his bold illustrations of Moby Dick.
Kent’s Salamina was inspired by the artist’s intense love of Greenland. The remoteness and isolation of the place had a raw beauty that Kent much admired, and he produced many paintings and prints of it. This plate features Salamina Fleischer, who was the subject of several paintings, and was on the cover of his 1935 memoir of Greenland. In the late 1930's he designed this table ware set for Vernon Hills, inspired & named for Salamina. This platter features an aluminum protective rim.
