William Spratling was an American-born artist and designer. Spratling started out studying and teaching architecture and eventually expanded his scope to working with silver and designing silver jewelry. He came to be known as 'The father of contemporary Mexican silver', working with and inspiring American and Mexican silversmiths in Taxco, Mexico. He incorporated native materials such as amethyst, turquoise, coral, rosewood and abalone into his creations. Depictions of real and mythical animals, and pre-Columbian motifs of discs, balls, straps and rope designs, were typical. Spratling's work can be viewed in the Milwaukee Art Museum, as well as museums across the globe.
